WHERE INSTITUTIONS AVOID AND RETAIL INVESTORS FIND BORING (special situation investing discussion thread?)

I meant to write this post when beginning the blog to assist in describing my investment style but it slipped my mind. It resurfaced in my thinking when I recently read a book Margin of Safety, by Seth Klarman. Some areas he cites in the book that are useful to look for opportunities are very similar to what I look for. It would also be great if readers can comment on any current “special situations” they see out there in the markets. Boardroom battles for small LICs (HHY & NGE). APW & GJT updates.

NGE – The proposal to establish a LIC is set for later this month. If they had of gone about this the right way (e.g. combine with some cornerstone investors to double the size paying NTA, detailed presentations highlighting management expenses and investment strategy) perhaps I could have supported this.

REPORTING SEASON updates REF, UOS, SSM, PTB, MEL, APW, MVT, TOP.

REF – A 1 cent fully franked dividend was confirmed recently. Whilst I fully expected this sometimes I feel the stock is priced such that the market expects management to waste the cash on some ridiculous acquisition. FRUSTRATED HOLDER OF APW (AIMS PROPERTY SECURITIES FUND)

Apologies as this probably turns into a rant because I am annoyed at not selling all of my holding in APW a bit over a year ago. As a bit of background I became involved with APW after they changed name and survived a resolution for a wind up, yet before they won a lawsuit giving the NTA and share price quite a nice kicker.
